The Terrace Times

Principal’s Message

Good afternoon parents / caregivers,

Welcome to the first edition of The Terrace Times for Term 2.

Welcome Back
Welcome back to Term 2.  With NAPLAN, Swimming Lessons (Years 3 – 6) and end of Semester Reports, this term is going to be a doozy!!

Parent Evening
Next Monday 8 May at 5:30pm will be the first of many parent IT info sessions this year.  Both Adam Cheetham (School Council Chairperson) and I will be running an information session for parents on how to use Connect. (Check out Adam’s School Council report for a breakdown of the session).  This will be a fun, low-key and interactive session aimed at improving communication between the school and parents/caregivers. So bring along a notepad and pen and your smart devices (phone or tablet) and we will make sure you get the best out of the evening.  I hope to see you all there!!

NAPLAN
Next week both Year 3 and Year 5 students undertake NAPLAN testing.  NAPLAN is the measure through which schools, teachers and parents can determine whether or not students are meeting important educational outcomes in literacy and numeracy. The tests provide parents and schools with an understanding of how individual students are performing at the time of the tests. They also provide schools with information about how education programs are working and what areas need to be prioritised for improvement. For some, this will be the first time they have sat a formal test; best of luck … give it your best shot!!

ANZAC Day Services
Anzac Terrace PS was involved in two ANZAC Day services last week (photos of both are later in this newsletter).  The first was the Town of Bassendean’s service held on ANZAC Day at the Bassendean War Memorial, where our Head Students Delilah and Cossette were part of the service.  The second was here at school last Friday.  Both were great services and all students should be extremely proud of their demeanour during the services.

Staff Leave
Deputy Principal, Liz Page, is currently on Long Service Leave and enjoying the sunny sights and sounds of Croatia. (I’m so jealous) Liz will return in week 6.  In her place I welcome Amanda McAlpine to the admin team.

Have a great week,

Stuart Blackwood
Principal

Being a Reading Sensation

As most of our students read each night, the BEARS reading program is not extra work for students, parents and caregivers or teachers, it is simply a method of calculating the number of nights the students read, and then rewards them at strategic numbers, eg 50, 100, 200 and so on.

Well done to the following students who have read for –

50 Nights
ECB 2Siena B, Lilli E, Taj M, Noah O, Isabella O, Harrison V
ECB 3Felix A, Millie B, Ruby C, Emily C, Lacey J, Kai T
Room 5Matvei K, Arwen L, Mitchell M

Anzac Terrace Netball News

As you may be aware, Anzac Terrace now have a Netball Club.

We have 2 teams representing our school in the Swan Districts Netball Association’s 2017 Winter Netball Season, Year 3/4 and Year 5, who both played their first game over the weekend.

Both teams played a fantastic game, utilising the skills learned at training along with great teamwork.

Unfortunately both teams were defeated, but the experience was a great learning curve for them. All of the girls really did a fantastic job and should all be extremely proud of themselves.

Well done girls!!!!!

Welcome back to Term 2, 2017. We hope everyone had a safe and enjoyable break – we’ve been hearing a lot of exciting stories from children as they’ve returned to OSHClub.

This term we are hoping to increase our knowledge and involvement in sustainable practices, if you have any suggestions or ways you can help us we would love to hear from you.

Last term we had visits from Miriam, a Veterinary Nurse from Morley Veterinary clinic, and Constables Sheridan and Appleby from the Kiara Police station – the children were excited to learn more about these professions. The police constables showed some of the resources they use to keep the community safe– the highlight was seeing the police car, hearing the siren and the children even got to sit in the front seat!

Miriam bought her very talented dog, Buzz, to meet the children. The children learned how to care for their pets, what tools and devices vets use and some very cool tricks dogs can learn.

Everyone loved watching Buzz dance and hug his teddy bear!

We are looking forward to another great term ahead. If you have any professional knowledge or special skills you would like to share please contact Jenny – we always appreciate feedback and involvement from parents, families and the wider community.
